In the Mahabharata, Karna was a great charioteer who, despite being the son of a deity, faced social ostracism and was rejected by the society. But Karna supported the Kauravas in the war of Mahabharata leaving his brothers (Pandvas).
Karna was the son of Kunti and Surya, Kunti gave birth to Karna when she was unmarried. Karna was born as a boon to Kunti when she was a virgin, when sage Durvasa visited her father's palace. Kunti served the sage respectfully for one year. Pleased with Kunti's service, he divinely saw that she would be married to Pandu and could not have children, so he gave a boon that she could get children by remembering any deity.
One day, Kunti meditated on the Sun God out of curiosity. The Sun God appeared from her and gave her a son who was as bright as the Sun and was born with a shield and a coil. But Kunti got worried due to the fear of the public shame of the society. So he put that child in a box and drowned it in Ganga ji.
Adhiratha, the charioteer of Maharaja Dhritarashtra and his wife Radha, found Karna floating in Gangaji and nurtured him. For this reason Karna is also called Radheya.
Due to the upbringing of Adhirath and his wife Radha, Karna neither got respect nor his rights in the society, and everyone used to call him as Sood's son. Draupadi, whom Karna wanted to be his life partner, refused to marry Karna because Karna was rhe son of Sud. For all these reasons, Karna hated the Pandavas and supported the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war.
Karna was very generous, so he used to donate anything to anyone who asked for it. Karna had a good resolution that whatever is asked from him at noon, when he worships the Sun God, he will promise to complete it. It was impossible for Karna to be physically harmed in the war because of the Kavach Kundal received from his birth. Then Arjuna's father Indra, disguised as a beggar, asked for Kavach Kundal at the time of mid-day worship, Suryadev had alerted Karna in the past that Indra would come to ask him for his Kavach Kundal as a donation. Knowing this, Karna donated the Kavach Kundal.
Being a charitable king, Lord Krishna tested Karna in his last moments and asked for donation from Karna, then Karna broke his gold teeth and offered them to Lord Krishna. Shri Krishna rejected the donation and said - Rajan, there is blood on these teeth and you have taken it out of your mouth, so this gold is false, we will not accept it. After that the arrow hit the ground. As soon as the arrow hit the ground, the strong water stream of the Ganges flowed out, Karna washed his teeth with it and giving it to them said – Brahmins now this heaven is pure, please accept it. Just then, there was a shower of flowers on Karna.
While praising Lord Shri Krishna, Karna said - Lord I am blessed to have your darshan, all my sins have been destroyed, Lord you are going to do welfare of the devotees. Pleased with Karna's charity, Lord Krishna asked Karna to ask for a boon. Remembering the injustice done to him in the form of a boon, Karna asked Lord Krishna to do welfare of the people of his class in his next birth. As a second boon, he asked for the birth of Lord Krishna to take his kingdom and as a third boon, someone who is free from sin should perform his last rites.
While giving the boon, Lord Krishna accepted all the boons, but with the third boon, Lord Krishna got confused and started thinking, where there is no sin. But Lord Krishna could not understand such a person who is free from sin. There was a commitment to give a boon, so Lord Krishna performed the last rites of Karna with his own hands and fulfilled the boon given to Karna.
In this way, despite supporting the unrighteousness of Danveer Karna, Lord Krishna had performed the last rites of Karna and sent him to Baikuntha Dham with Veergati.
